Field of research

He has a special research interest in applying Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to surveillance, spatial analysis and epidemiology of bowel disease and in public health issues related to the agroenvironment.

Description of ongoing projects

  • The epidemiology of several zoonotic bowel diseases shows the importance of the role of food animals as reservoirs for microorganisms.
  • The transmission of microorganisms through water is more complex than their transmission through food.
  • A recent research has lead to the development of Agroenvironmental Hygienic Pressure Indicators (AHPI). These indicators assess the public health risk associated with some zoonotic bacteria released in the agroenvironment by livestock operations.

Motivation and experience

Pascal Michel holds a veterinary medicine diploma (1987, Montreal), a masters in epidemiology and veterinary preventive medicine (1992, California) and a doctorate in epidemiology (1997, Guelph). He is presently Scientific Coordinator and Epidemiologist-Researcher for the Laboratory for Foodborne Zoonosis of Health Canada.
