Field of research
Remote sensing application in the fields of cartography and digital elevation models. Modeling and statistical analysis of remote sensing data. Relations and interactions between raster and vector data. Remote sensing application in geology and geomorphological processes.
Description of ongoing projects
Base mapping at the scale of 1:50 000 must be completed for northern Canada, approximately 1500 maps are still to be made. The technologies employed for this project are conventional aerial photography for the extraction of planimetric features and radar interferometry with ERS-1 and ERS-2 images for the digital elevation models (DEM). SPOT-5 satellite images are also investigated as a potential source for the extraction of planimetric features and DEM production.

Create and establish a robust validation process for the DEMs;

Investigate other potential sources for the extraction of planimetric features and the DEM production (SPOT-5, RADARSAT-2, …);

Find new ways for validating the accuracy of DEMs, with, for example, ICESat LIDAR satellite data, which has very high absolute precision.
Pixel2Map project: There exists a lot of land cover product, i.e. Canadian Forest Service, Agriculture and Agro-Food Canada, Canadian Centre of Remote Sensing, Environment Canada, among others. The present project aims at the conversion of raster data into vector format. This conversion is followed by integration in a multi-layer context.
Motivation and experience
Alexandre Beaulieu has always been fascinated with Earth observation. The different perspectives supplied by satellite images over a given surface, either from different image types (optic, radar, infrared,…) or from different resolutions, constantly impress him. Alexandre is interested in understanding these differences and to exploit them in order to better characterize the observed phenomenon’s.
